Middle Jump River Watershed

Details

The Middle Jump River watershed contains the North Fork of the Jump River, the downstream portion of the South Fork Jump, and nine miles of the Jump River after the two forks meet. This watershed has only one lake of any size, Cranberry Lake at the head of the North Fork Jump. The watershed has many miles of streams, most of which are small forage fish streams. The intermittent flow conditions of these streams are characteristic of the drainage patterns in this geographical area. The watershed is largely public and private wild land and is quite rocky in places. It also contains a significant amount of wetlands. Much of the watershed which extends into Taylor County is in the Chequamegon National Forest. The two municipalities in the watershed are Kennan and Catawba. both of which are sewered. The North Fork of the Jump River begins at Cranberry Lake which receives discharge from a large commercial cranberry operation. Spring Creek is a short feeder stream into one of the impoundments. Most of the other streams in the watershed are quite small, and little is known about them. Hobbles Creek is the longest stream in the watershed other than the Jump River. Hobbles supports a warm water sport fish community. Needles Creek has the potential for to be affected by a gravel pit operation.

Ecological Landscapes for Middle Jump River Watershed

Ecological Landscapes

The North Central Forest Ecological Landscape occupies much of the northern third of Wisconsin. Its landforms are characterized by end and ground moraines with some pitted outwash and bedrock controlled areas. Kettle depressions and steep ridges are found in the northern portion. Two prominent areas in this Ecological Landscape are the Penokee-Gogebic Iron Range in the north extending into Michigan, and Timm's Hill, the highest point in Wisconsin (1,951 feet) in the south. Soils consist of sandy loam, sand, and silts. The vegetation is mainly forest, with many wetlands and some agriculture, though the growing season is not as favorable as it is in southern Wisconsin. Lake Superior greatly influences the northern portion of the Ecological Landscape especially during the winter season, producing greater snowfall than in most areas in Wisconsin. The historic vegetation was primarily hemlock-hardwood forest dominated by hemlock, sugar maple, and yellow birch. There were some smaller areas of white and red pine forest scattered throughout the Ecological Landscape, and individual white pines trees were a component of the hemlock-hardwood forest. Harvesting hemlock to support the tanneries was common at the turn of the century, and the species soon became a minor component of forests due to over-harvesting and lack of regeneration. Currently, forests cover approximately 80% of this Ecological Landscape. The northern hardwood forest is dominant, made up of sugar maple, basswood, and red maple, and also including some scattered hemlock and white pine pockets within stands. The aspen-birch forest type group is also relatively abundant, followed by spruce-fir. A variety of wetland community types also are present, both forested and non-forested.

Wildlife and Habitat

The Bureau of Endangered Resources documents occurrences of a dragonfly species which is endangered in Wisconsin, as well as several Wisconsin Special Concern Species in the Lower South Fork of the Jump River. The populations of these species appear lower than expected given the excellent structure available in the River (Bur. of Endangered Resources. 1993).

Lake Holcombe Improvement Association Inc.: Holcombe Ewm '09: The Lake Holcombe Improvement Association proposes to contract for chemical treatment to control Eurasian Watermilfoil investation in an approx. 10-acre area of Pine Lake, an off-shoot of the Holcombe Flowage in Chippewa County. Other major project elements include hand-pulling in selected areas and Clean Boats Clean Waters outreach, all to be conducted by association volunteers.

Price County: Lmi-Phase Ii Butternut Wq Assessment/Modeling: The Price County Land Conservation Dept will sponsor a project which will collect all needed data to create a response model for Butternut Lake including a water budget, detailed phosphorus budget, lake water quality modeling and evaluation of groundwater impacts. Deliverables will include all data collected and a final report summarizing the findings.

DNR will be provided with a copy of reports and publications produced in both written and electronic (PDF) format. DNR will also be provided with a summary of all the efforts under this grant that are not included in reports or other written documents.

City Of Ladysmith: Res-Corbett Lake Aeration Project: The City of Ladysmith will conduct an improvement project on Corbett Lake, which lies within the corporate limits of the city. This project involves the installation of a system of bottom aerators in the lake. Bottom aerators would be installed at 11 locations in the eastern half of the lake basin. Compressors would be located within Falge Park, which is located along the northern shoreline of Corbett Lake. The park is owned and operated by the City of Ladysmith.

A special condition of this grant project is that the installation and operation of this aeration system must comply with all conditions of the water regulation permit issued by this department for the aeration system.

The City of Ladysmith shall notify the Department of Natural Resources upon completion of the installation of the aeration system.

Price County: Shoreline Protection & Restoration Through Education: Price County LCD will sponsor a project to educate property owners on the value of maintaining and restoring natural shorelines. This project is crucial in protecting natural resources (fish and wildlife habitat) and reducing the impact on our surface waters caused by development.

The project includes the following goals: 1) Create "Caring for our Shorelines," a property owners guide to shoreline protection; 2) In cooperation with the Price County Waterway Association and others, develop additional educational/informational marketing strategies and distribute "Caring for our Shorelines"; 3) Establish "Shoreline Friends" program, mailing informational packet to new waterfront property owners or distribution via lake and river groups; 4) Assist property owners with the development of shoreline restoration plans; 5) Monitor shoreline restoration sites; 6) In cooperation with the LCD, continue to implement cost sharing foe shoreline restoration; 7) Continue general shoreline protection information/education program by developing training sessions for landscape contractors and material suppliers to educate them on shoreline protection and restoration.

Project deliverables include: 1) Create "Caring for our Shorelines," a property owners guide to shoreline protection; 2) Develop "Shoreline Friends" program and informational packet; 3) Assist approximately 25 shoreline restoration sites each year in Price County; 4) Host workshops for landscapers and other contractors working with shoreline protection and restoration; 5) Final report summarizing the activities and accomplishments of the project.
